Scoreless Success

October 6, 2017:

Following a 28-14 victory over rivals Glen Ridge, the Cedar Grove High School football team was looking to keep their two-game winning streak going with a victory over the Weequahic Indians.  The Panthers did not disappoint, as they went on to dominate 19-0 on the night of the annual Topoleski Game.  The team continued to show off their supreme offense and strong defense to the purple-clad crowd, shocking the previously undefeated Indians in an underdog victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, Cedar Grove’s Sammy Ventola ‘18 connected to Mike Lever ‘19 downfield in the second for a 16-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion failed to leave the score at 6-0.  In the third quarter, Ventola was able to find John Guaimano ‘19 in the end zone to make the score 12-0, and after a successful 12-yard run and kick by Ryan Lopez ‘18 the score was a comfortable 19-0.

From there the Panther’s defense was able to hold the Indians to a scoreless game, thanks to the efforts of the defensive line.  The Panthers are now bumped up to 3-2 on the season and sit 9th in the group one rankings.  They look forward to taking on the 4-1 Westwood Cardinals this Friday, and once again proving their strength as the predicted underdogs.
