Boys Basketball–2/3/18

The CG boys basketball team fell to Irvington 50-38 in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday, February 3rd, with a second-half performance that had Panthers fans on the edge of their seats.  

After a tough first half in which the Panthers were down by 19 points, the team came back to narrow the Blue Knight’s lead to only 9 in the fourth quarter, before ultimately losing by 12.  Center Mike Pronesti ‘18 was the big scorer of the game from both benches, leading the way with 19 points.  Following him for Cedar Grove was point guard Sammy Ventola ‘18 with 7 points, and forward Luca Greco ‘18 and guard Shane Benson ‘18 each adding 4 points, respectively.  

With the loss, the Panthers fall to 8-11 on the season and currently sit 5th in the Independence Division with a conference record of 4-7.  The team will head to the court again on Tuesday, February 6th to take on rivals Glen Ridge, who sit atop the Independence division with a conference record of 11-1.

 With this game, the Panthers hope to avenge their previous 41-36 loss to the Ridgers and gain some much-needed momentum going into third-seeded Nutley on February 13th.
