The Cedar Grove boys’  basketball team had their first game on December 15. They versed Weequahic High School. That Friday started off rough when the boys’ freshman team had to cancel the game because Weequahic could not make it. Thankfully varsity were able to play and JV were only able to play 2 quarters because of how late the other team was.

Varsity took a win 52-50, due to the teams dynamic. One of the senior players, Dennis Mitola ‘18, explained that since most of the team consists of  seniors they are able to work together from playing together for so long. They know the strengths and weaknesses of one another and can work together as a team. Mitola expanded on how they “stress things like defense and rebounding in order to win,” which they successfully did. Even though the other team was bigger, Cedar Grove never put their heads down.

In the first three quarters Cedar Grove was trailing but made their comeback in the fourth to win.  The first quarter CG was down by one, 11-10. By the second half Cedar Grove was trailing 27-22.  The team stuck with what Coach Jones told them to do, and it lead them to the win with senior Shane Benson ‘18 scoring the last basket form a free throw shot. In the last quarter the team scored 18 points and Mike Pronesti ‘18 had the most points with 25 points.

By the end of the game the team had 27 rebounds, two blocks, and 12 steals. After their first game this season, they have had a smooth sail with a 5-0 record and winning their tournament over winter break.

The boys team has had 8 games since and there record now is 5-3, they won against Weequahic, North 13th Street Tech, Livingston, West Essex, and Verona. The North street Tech game was high in score, 64-51 with Mike Pronesti ‘18 leading the offense. Against Livingston the score wasn’t as high being 45-39. For both the West Essex game and Verona game the boys scored 40 points. While West Essex scored 20 points and Verona scored 37 points. The last three games were a little struggle with losing. The most recent game against Montclair Kimberley Academy, Cedar Grove with 41 points and MKA with 56 points. Mike Pronesti ‘18 scored 10 points while Sammy Ventola ‘18 and Lucas Greco ‘18 scored 8 points. Let’s hope the boys can get back on their winning streak.
